The free things to do includes lots of beach activities, including swimming at the local family beaches such as Cotton Tree and Mooloolaba, but also waiting for the tide to go out at Cotton Tree so you can take the kids our to the sandbars. The parks along the beachlines are also free, with playgrounds and toilets regularly dotting the way. Perfect for picnics.
Go whale watching at Point Cartwright, Kawana. You might need a pair of binoculars to get a good view but if you’re after a more intimate experience spotting whales then a whale watching cruise might just be the thing for you and your family. There are plenty to choose from, but make sure you come between July and November for the great migration.
You can also get up close and personal and feed wild dolphins in Tin Can Bay at the Barnacles Dolphin Centre, where you’ll be able to hand feed these beautiful mammals. This neck of the woods, or should we say ocean is packed with adventure and activities. You’ll also be close by Rainbow Beach and Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand island and home to some very unique flora, fauna and some very pristine river and beach environments. At Rainbow Beach you’ll find the eponymously named rainbow sands and while you can swim there, there are some strong tidal currents. It’s always recommended to swim between the flags.
For a visit to Fraser Island you’ll definitely want to book a 4-wheel drive tour as getting to and traversing the island requires transport that can handle rough and sandy terrain, and you’ll want to be able to devote your attention to the scenery and not the drive.
Nature lovers will also enjoy visiting the Noosa Biosphere. Driving to Noosa is very straightforward, but you may wish to book a kayak tour to explore the Noosa Everglades, a part of the Noosa Biosphere. There’s also birdwatching and wildlife tours too.
